1.     Failure of Weather Stripping

Due to frozen water near the garage door, your weather stripping might stick to the ground. This increases the chances of your stripping being torn, which will leave your garage with poor insulation. Just make sure to sweep away any snow and mop any water that might be near your garage door so that your garage remains nice and warm.

2.     Broken Springs or Gears

If your garage door opener is making all the right noises, but your door is not budging, then you might have some mechanical issues that need to be fixed. It might be due to broken gears or springs because of either the age of the opener, or the freezing of your garage door to the floor. Because the door is stuck to the floor, and you are trying to open it, something has to give way to balance the forces. Most of the time, it is the gears or the springs which give way and need repairing. Call us at 251-626-0773 and we will surely fix this issue for you!

3.     Grease Issues

There nothing wrong with having excess grease on the tracks of your garage door throughout the year, but in the winter months, it gets really problematic. By excess lubrication, your rollers can misalign restricting smooth opening and closing of your garage door. Make sure to find the correct balance between the right and excess amount of lubrication for your garage door to work properly in winters.

Another issue with grease is its thickening. Most of the lubricants are designed to work at hot temperatures which are common for high-power machineries. Thus, low temperatures harden the grease, thickening it to a point that it accounts for poor lubrication. For better lubrication in winter, remove your thickened grease with an applicable solvent and use a silicone-based oil instead for lubrication.

4.     Metal Contraction

It is the inherent property of metals to contract under cold temperatures. Always keep an eye out for the metal parts in your assembly in winter because the cold can cause screws, springs and other components to seize up, leading to garage door malfunction. To prevent this kind of problem, properly lubricate your garage door in such weathers.

5.     Frozen Door

When ice and water piles up underneath your garage door, it can cause your door to freeze to the floor. Your opener will try its best to open it, but the door will not budge. Or if your door did manage to open, it will not close all the way down due to ice. Keep the area underneath your garage door clean from water and ice. Spraying cooking spray on the rubber seal at the bottom of the garage door also helps in keeping it from freezing to the floor.

We at A Plus Garage Doors hope that these tips help you protect your garage door from issues during these winter months. Please call us if we can help in Eastern Shore call 251 626-0773 in South Baldwin County call 251 971-3331.
